Haylage has a slightly lower dry matter than hay which makes it a dust free feed, ideal for horses which suffer from COPD. It is preserved by its air-tight wrap which allows a mild ‘pickling’ process giving haylage its pleasant sweet smell.
A little of the grass sugar is used in this fermentation process but generally more of the grasses nutrients stay intact in the bale. A sealed bale will last for at least a year but once opened to the air begins to deteriorate like any good brew. The rate of deterioration is temperature dependent, so an opened bale will last approximately 3 weeks in the winter but only 5 days in the summer. Our haylage is made from relatively mature mixed grasses as this produces a product more suitable for our typical consumer – horses having an intermediate level of exercise.
Hay is grass cut at a relatively mature stage and sun dried to a point where it is preserved by its high dry matter. The bales do not require wrapping but must be stored in a dry barn as moisture will quickly spoil them. It is an ideal winter feed for most horses but cannot be considered dust free. There can be a little wastage with hay as it is slightly less palatable due to its high dry matter.
Locally produced and selected as bedding straw for horses. Usually wheat straw.
